Mobily announces 1m mobile broadband subscribers

Saudi Arabia's Etihad Etisalat Co. (Mobily) has announced the number of mobile broadband subscribers has reached one million. The company has said its monthly traffic, upload and downloaded by customers, has grown more than 10 times since December 2007 to-date and stood at over 50 terabytes for December 2009.

Zain extends roaming services to Africa

Kuwait's Zain has said its roaming data transfer and internet access services are now available through its networks in Africa. The company's customers in Kuwait will no longer have to pay any international roaming surcharges for mobile phone services in all its 13 African markets in which it operates, the firm said in a statement.

Burj Dubai gets latest telco technologies

Etisalat and Du have said that they have finished installing various fixed line and mobile communications technologies in the Burj Dubai, including Wimax and fourth generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) connectivity. Etisalat said that eLife, its 30Mbps broadband service, will be available throughout the world's tallest tower, for apartments, retail outlets and the Armani Hotel. Burj Dubai is due to be opened on January 4.

Microsoft to pay millions after patent ruling defeat

Microsoft, the world's largest software manufacturer, has to pay a small Canadian company more than $290 million after losing an appeal over a patent related to XML technology used in their popular Word software.

The case started in 2007 when i4i sued Microsoft for alleging that the software giant infringed on their 1998 patent for custom XML technology by integrating it into their Word software, starting with Word 2003. In August this year, a United States District Court found Microsoft guilty of the charges and issued an injunction ordering themto pay i4i $200 million in damages and get rid of custom-XML support or stop selling copies of Word.

Du reacts to iPhone shortage in UAE


UAE telco du has admitted there's a shortage of iPhone 3GS smartphones in the country in the run-up to Christmas and revealed that makers of the popular smartphone are unable to meet demand.

SMBs say cloud computing still not safe enough

More than half of SMBs cite security as the main reason why they are still wary of adopting cloud-computing based environments, according to a report from analysts Forrester Research.

In the report, Enterprise And SMB Hardware Survey, North America And Europe, Q3 2009, 51% of respondents from small and medium-size businesses believe that security and privacy concerns still outweigh the benefits of adopting cloud computing, while 49% of enterprise execs cited similar beliefs.

Etisalat partners withDubai Airport Freezone

Etisalat and the Dubai Airport Freezone have signed an agreement aimed at providing enhanced telecom & ICT services for tenants at the Freezone on a priority basis. As part of the agreement, Etisalat will establish a dedicated presence within Dubai Airport Freezone to facilitate its services and support for more than 1,450 companies currently operating at the Freezone.

Telecom Egypt eyes mobile service

Egypt's fixed-line monopoly Telecom Egypt will need to provide mobile services to compensate for declining landline subscriptions, a company executive was quoted on Monday as saying. 'The company must obtain a mobile service in order to continue,' Vice President Mohammed Abdel Rehim told Egypt's al-Alam al-Youm newspaper. The number of fixed-line phones was declining due to competition from mobile telephones, he added.

Majority use internet for news in MENA region

A new study into the internet usage habits and attitudes of people from the Middle East and North Africa revealed that the internet is now a main source of information, with 78% saying that they used the medium for reading news atleast once a month.

The study, which was conducted in cooperation with research firm YouGov Siraj, is based on survey responses of 13,847 people (aged 16+) from the United Arab Emirates, KSA, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Pakistan collected online between 30th October and 22nd November 2009.
