Bharti Airtel's $9bn acquisition of Kuwait-based Zain's African assets may receive financial backing from Singapore Telecoms (SingTel), Reuters has reported. Skype says it is open to talks over UAE ban

Josh Silverman, chief executive of global VoIP service provider, Skype has said the firm is open to discussions with the government of the UAE over its ban on access to the service, Zawya Dow Jones has reported. "I personally feel it's quite short-sighted of the government. We are always open to discussions," Silverman said at a media summit in Abu Dhabi. "The Middle East is important for Skype. We know they want to use our software, and we want to help them," he added.

Toshiba to tackle the channel's health in Qatar

Notebook vendor vows to introduce new local initiatives through distributor PC Dealnet

Toshiba has promised resellers in Qatar that it will implement "channel health programmes" that review sales staff, training and rebates as it embarks on its second year of partnership with in-country distributor PC Dealnet.

The notebook vendor claims the pair will work together to "strengthen channel engagement", which will include new standards for after-sales service and warranty. Toshiba recently launched its ‘Profit for Performance' (P4P) rebate programme to key Qatari dealers and retailers in a move that is designed to improve channel profitability.....

New telecom company granted licence in UAE

A third telecom company has been granted a licence to operate in the UAE providing further choice and competition for consumers.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) awarded Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) a ten-year satellite services license for the installation, operation and management of a public telecommunications network and provision of satellite telecommunications services in the UAE.

UAE telco Du posts strong full-year 2009 results

All segments of UAE operator Du's business grew over the past 12 months, according to the telco's CEO, who said that he expects profit to continue to grow above the market average in 2010.

A buoyant Osman Sultan, Du CEO, said at a press conference today that revenue was up by 35% to AED5.3 billion (US$1.45 billion) in 2009, while net profit before royalty stood at AED528 million ($144 million), compared to AED8 million ($2.2 million) in 2008.

New GCC telecoms cable slated for 2011 completion

A new underwater telecommunications cable designed to improve services offered by key operators in the GCC region is set for completion in 2011, it was announced on Tuesday.

Indian telecoms services firm Tata Communications last year signed agreements with Bahrain Internet Exchange, Nawras of Oman, Qatar Telecom, Mobily of Saudi Arabia and the UAE's Etisalat to build the TGN Gulf project.

Zain to focus on Middle East growth

Zain plans to increase its focus on extracting growth from its Middle East operations, and is interested in a long term license agreement in Lebanon and other potential opportunities for expansion in the region, Nabil bin Salama, the company's CEO, said in an emailed statement to Zawya Dow Jones.

Salama added that Zain intends generate further growth from its operations in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Sudan. In the statement, Salama added that Zain "is also interested in any other opportunities to expand if it gives good returns and conforms with the group's strategy for the new phase."

Qtel completes fibre trials

Qtel has completed its first fibre optic pilot in Qatar with residents of the Mesaieed and West Bay Lagoon areas of the country now having access to internet speeds of up to 50 Mbps using the technology.

Qtel, which is working with Chinese vendor Huawei on the project, said it was finalising a plan to deploy FTTH services across the rest of the country.

Etisalat issues $1.17 billion dividend

Etisalat has approved a dividend of 60% of the face value of its shares for the financial year 2009, which equates to a total payout of AED4.3 billion ($1.17 billion). At the end of January, Etisalat reported net profits of AED8.8 billion ($2.4 billion) for 2009, on revenues of AED30.8 billion

Etisalat's board of directors also said it planned to issue a further 718.7 million bonus shares of AED1 each for existing shareholders, to be distributed at a ratio of one share for every 10 shares.
