was the final day of ARABCOM 98 the First International Telecommunication
Development Congress & Exhibition for the Arab states, which was held
from 26 Feb - 2 March at Le Bristol Hotel, and Beirut Hall site.
ARABCOM 98 was held Under the Auspices of the Lebanese President of The
Council Of Ministers Mr. Rafic Hariri, Supported by the ITU, League
of the Arab states, Gulf Co-operation Council, ETSI, World Bank, IFC.
The Event attracted over
5,000 professional visitors including 9 Arab states Telecom Ministers in
addition to a large number of Ministerial Delegations, International Organizations.
A large number of highly
placed VIPs from both government and Industry, who came to see the latest
technologies on display from Telecommunications, to information technology
and other communications sectors.
ARABCOM 98 was the First
event of Its kind to be organized by Hitek magazine & The Xperimental
Group both professional and specialized in Telecom field since 1993
in Lebanon and the region with a rich portfolio of over 8 Telecom shows
and 42 congress & seminars.
Encompassed over 40 sessions
and featured more than 40 speakers, who came from all over the world to
discuss the challenges facing the Telecommunications in the Arab states.
The Congress opened on Thursday 26 Feb at 9:30 am with speeches from Mrs.
Katia Tayar the Organizer, Lebanese Minister of Information Mr. Bassem
el Sabeh representing The Prime Minister, and Mr. Ahmad Laouyane Head
ITU / BDT.

Recommendations
It was agreed to send a
Letter to the General Secretary of the ITU, explaining the wish of all
the participants to nominate " ARABCOM " as The Arab states Telecommunication
event, and it was approved to Organize each year an ARABCOM gathering all
Ministers, General Directors, Executives, Developers, Operators, Manufacturers,
Decision makers under one roof to continue the discussions started, and
to enhance the role of international Organizations regarding Telecom development
in the Arab world.

The Exhibition
For the first time in
the Arab states region Operators exhibited at a show. ( Ericsson - Alcatel
- France Telecom - SIRTI - Motorola - GlobalOne - Iridium - Arabsat - MCI
- Gulfsat - TESAM Globalstar …)
Unlike any previous exhibition
ever seen in the Region, ARABCOM 98, was focused for Highly professionals
and Ministries in part and end users in a very small part.Demonstrations
of the latest in Infrastructure, Networking, Satellite Communications,
Information Technology, Private Network, Rural & remote services, Video
conferencing, Multimedia technologies, Internet applications, Cabling,
Diagnostic and Testing, PABX / PBX / ISDN / Frame Relay/ Multiplexers /
Switching and many more.ARABCOM 98 was the venue for the launching of a
new series of Technologies, Products and services in Telecom Development
field, which examines the relation ship between Telecom and these fields.
